As I am studying Interior Design and getting near the end of the course…Module 9 of 10! (so exciting!!) I thought I should re-aquaint myself with the essential stages in an Interior Design Project. After all, I will hopefully be doing some projects soon with my newly learned skills.
The first stage of an interior design project is very important and that is the design brief stage. The design brief is a written summary of what the project will involve and what the needs and wants of the client are. It should be clear and concise and not leave any openings for uncertainty. This design brief should ideally be done in person during a face-to-face meeting.

The next stage is research and development. This is where the designer goes back to the office loaded with information about what the client would like to see as a result of the project. Things to research may include current trends, suitable materials and possible tradesmen to use. When dealing with tradesmen, it is useful to have a good relationship with them. Sometimes that can be enough to encourage them to go out of their way for you when help is needed and that in turn enables you to provide an excellent service for the client.

The next thing that needs to be done after research is choosing a style for the project. This style will depend on what the clients needs are and may possibly be influenced a little by your own personal style. Although if that personal style conflicts with what the client wants, the client’s style must come first. Next the designer must summarize the ideas and inspirations for the project and present them to the client. There are different styles of presenting and those can include hand drawn sketches, sample boards and computer-generated visuals. Sometimes a tender is required for a commercial project and at this stage the designer would present their summarized ideas and pitch for the job.

There may be high competition for the job and a good pitch and design package is essential. Once the client has approved the ideas and style for the project it is time to sign some sort of agreement and arrange for initial deposit. Once this is done, the designer must incorporate a time schedule for the job. This involves speaking with different contractors that might be involved to ensure that the job starts at an agreed time. The designer must ensure that once the project has started that it runs on time, smoothly and on budget. If there are any delays or problems they must be communicated to the client so that they too are in the know. Excellent communication between the client and designer are key to a successful project. From the first initial client brief to working on the actual project all the way through to completion, the interior designer must communicate efficiently so that the end result is a fantastic space that meets the aesthetic and functional needs of the client.
I cannot wait until I get to do a real project for a real client! (besides myself and “the Moore’s”, my fictional client that I have been “working” with throughout my course)
